Flight Search & Reservation Booking Platform

The Project

SITA, one of the largest and most storied aviation IT companies in the world partnered with my team at ExpandTheRoom complete redesign of their web-based flight search and reservations system, Horizon. This platform had to serve the e-commerce customers and reservation agents for over 400 of SITA’s airline clients worldwide.

The Challenge

The sheer scale of the Horizon redesign effort presented a range of interesting design challenges. This project involved about three dozen internal stakeholders across six time zones. We had to keep them all current with rapidly iterating design deliverables to capture and address their feedback.

As an industry, aviation IT is yoked with technology debt due to legacy back-end systems. The structure and limitations of those systems had a massive impact on the design choices we made.

In addition, aviation at large is one of the most regulated industries. The number of rules governing things like how seats are priced, allocated and purchased all played an integral role in how we designed the platform architecture and user interface.

Because Horizon was to be used by hundreds of SITA’s airline clients from Air India to Malaysian Air, we had to design the interface to seamlessly integrate with their existing brand look and feel. In addition, because those clients are literally all over the globe, we also had pay considerable attention to designing for internationalization and localization.

The Process

My Involvement

I led a multi-disciplinary project team of UX researchers, strategists, visual designers, and front-end developers. I also served as the UX lead interaction designer and content strategist for the the project.

My contributions included:

  • Leading cross-team workshops for initial project framing and contextualization

  • Stakeholder and end-user interviews

  • Ethnographic field study of airline reservations agents

  • UX heuristic and best practices audit of their current platform

  • Compiling & analyzing key findings from discovery

  • Leading cross-team workshops to define core project strategy and creative direction

  • User journey mapping and interactive flow diagramming

  • Wireframes for approximately 300 desktop, tablet and mobile user interface screens

  • Interactive prototypes and usability tests

  • Information architecture and interaction design of the Altitude design system for SITA to use in future initiatives

  • Design documentation and handover to developers
