Online Human Resource Services Marketplace

The Project

The Innovation Group at Mercer, a global human resource consulting firm, partnered with my team at ExpandTheRoom when they had the kernel of an idea for a self-service human resources marketplace - a sort of TaskRabbit for HR. The project eventually dubbed Mercer Pocket Pro, aimed to disrupt the HR consulting space. Growing start-ups could hire an HR consultant on the platform for roughly $250 an hour as opposed to the $600 hourly rate of Mercer's full-service consultants. Mercer's retiring HR consultants who still wanted to work hours of their choosing comprised MPP's pool of for-hire talent.

The Challenge

Because I came aboard the MPP project at such a formative phase, there was a good deal of business strategy work to do before we could set about designing the system architecture and interface. I worked closely with the product owner from Mercer's Innovation group to flesh out MPP's core business rules. For example, I helped to define the MPP's monetization strategy and a scalable process for onboarding new HR consultants to the platform.

Designing the system architecture for an online marketplace comes with a unique set of challenges. It requires the ability to consider the needs of two very different constituencies, HR consultants, and the clients who hire them. Those different needs, however, must be met inside a holistic, consistent user experience.

As with any new, innovative product, the MPP leadership made several strategic pivots during the design process. My design team and I had to be able to pull the design implications those pivots through the working designs. Because we were working against an aggressive, unmovable schedule, these iterations had to happen very quickly.

The Process

My Involvement

I led a multi-disciplinary project team of UX researchers, strategists, visual designers, and front-end developers. I also served as the UX lead interaction designer and content strategist for the project.

My contributions included:

  • Leading cross-team workshops for initial project framing and contextualization

  • Stakeholder and end-user interviews

  • Competitive analysis

  • Compiling & analyzing key findings from discovery

  • User journey mapping and interactive flow diagramming

  • Wireframes for approximately 200 user interface screens

  • Interactive prototypes and usability tests

  • Comprehensive design documentation for visual design and development hand-off

The Outcome

Mercer PocketPro launched with a healthy amount of fanfare in 2016. In 2017, Mercer changed the name of the platform to PeoplePro, but kept the core functionality intact. Although PeoplePro has been taken down at the time of this writing, the project represents a successful implementation of Lean UX design to achieve a Minimal Viable Product offering for Mercer.
